The Fingerprint Reader could be one of the extra features that pushed up the cost of the laptop or PC you bought. It only makes sense to put it to good use, having paid for it.
The Fingerprint Reader is a security feature and adds another important layer of protection to your PC. It won’t prevent your laptop being stolen, but it can protect your sensitive business or personal information being accessed by unauthorized persons - whether when your laptop is stolen or just when it happens to be available to another person.
The Fingerprint Reader is designed to prevent unauthorised access. This security system is hinged on the uniqueness of each person’s fingerprint. Once your fingerprint is enrolled into your laptop, the Fingerprint Reader will recognize it when you want to access your system. Since no other person has the same fingerprint as you, that means they will not be able to access your laptop. It is believed to offer advanced logon security to your PC
How to Know if Your Laptop Has the Fingerprint Reader
Unfortunately, not every PC comes with this feature. If your laptop is equipped with a fingerprint reader, you will find that information stated in the specs for the laptop. You will also see the fingerprint reader, a small square metallic scanner, usually located below the keyboard – see image.
Enrolling Your Fingerprint in the Fingerprint Reader
The fingerprint reader has to recognize your fingerprint, so, the first step is to capture (enroll) your fingerprint. You must set up a user account on the PC to do so. If more than one person will access the computer with fingerprint logon, each must have a separate user account set up on the computer.

The user will enroll his fingerprint, using the Fingerprint Enrollment Wizard. Go to:
Start => All Programs => DigitalPersona Personal => Fingerprint Enrollment Wizard. Click Next. Follow the onscreen prompts to register your fingerprint, placing your finger on the fingerprint reader when prompted to. It is recommended by HP that you enroll at least two fingerprints. So, your fingerprint is now captured.
Using Your Fingerprint to Logon
Once your fingerprint is properly enrolled, you can now use it to access the computer. It’s best you test this right away. You can click on Start => Log Off. Then click on your username to logon again. Run your fingerprint on the reader to logon. Successful? Congrats!
To ensure proper reading of your finger print, HP recommends this approach:
-
Hold your finger flat as you move it across the reader.
- Move your finger in a straight line without turning it sidewards.
- Move your finger slowly enough to allow time for the reader to recognize it.
Hopefully, you can now get going with your Fingerprint Reader, without any additional help. Congrats, again!
